You're excited to be going on your first cruise. You can envision yourself relaxing in the hot tub or sipping on a frozen piña colada. So, let's make sure it becomes an enjoyable memory by keeping in mind some easy-to-do tips.
1. Buy Traveler's Insurance.
It’s better to pay the extra money to ensure you are protected in the event of an emergency before or during the trip. When you have traveler’s insurance, most insurance will cover cancelling the trip within 24 hours of departure. If that doesn't persuade you, consider it for medical coverage. Unexpected events can be financially burdensome without insurance coverage.
2. Use A Passport Instead Of A Birth Certificate And ID.
Passports are useful not just for embarking on the ship, but also for carrying with you during port visits. It is crucial to have your passport in case you miss the ship and need it at the US Embassy to organize a return flight home.
3. Get The Correct Size Luggage.
Please review the guidelines provided by your chosen cruise line. Most carry-on suitcases from the US will be permitted, including sizes 20” and some 24”. Remember not to lock your luggage.
4. Get The Package!
Purchasing in advance or as part of a bundle is more cost-effective than buying onboard. Opt. for a drink package if you prefer beverages other than tea, coffee, or juice. Similarly, if you like specialty dining, consider purchasing it in advance. And if you require internet access, invest in the WIFI package.
Cool tip: Some cruise lines will have some packaged items as incentives, and you only need to pay taxes.
5. Prepay Gratuity.
Avoiding a bill of over a hundred dollars to settle at the conclusion of your cruise is something no one desires, including me! Paying gratuities in advance helps to minimize unexpected charges on your final bill. It also ensures that every staff member who contributed to making your first cruise experience a success is duly compensated, not just the visible employees.
6. Bring These Miscellaneous Items.
For the luggage tags provided by your cruise line, purchase clear plastic luggage tag sleeves to ensure your luggage arrives safely to your stateroom and is not misplaced. Consider getting a lanyard to keep your cruise card secure while on the ship. Remember to pack over-the-counter medicine or Band-Aids for any potential illnesses or minor injuries. Bring a tumbler to keep your drinks cold and covered during your leisure time on the ship. Use beach towel clips to prevent your towels from blowing away while relaxing on the beach or by the pool. If you enjoy water activities, bring a waterproof cellphone case to capture underwater pictures while snorkeling.
7. Download The Cruise APP.
Before embarking on the cruise ship, make sure to download the cruise line app. This app is essential for your entire journey, from check-in to daily itinerary updates. It will serve as your go-to resource for staying informed about onboard activities, particularly in case of cancellations or changes in entertainment schedules.
